Auckland actor and musician Cole Thomas Johnston, 28, can now be named as the man facing 12 serious sexual charges, including rape, indecent acts, and grooming of a girl he met through a drama group between 2017 and 2021.
Johnston, who has performed internationally and worked extensively with child performers, previously taught at the National Youth Theatre.
He denies the allegations and has vowed to clear his name through legal channels. His bid for continued name suppression was denied by Judge Simon Lance, who ruled that the threshold for extreme hardship was not met and emphasised the principle of open justice.
In a report on legacy media last week Johnston denied the allegations, saying he was “devastated, deeply shaken and utterly shocked”.
Police say the alleged offending began after a report in September 2024 and involves multiple representative charges.
Judge Simon Lance created hardship by releasing the accused name before the allegations were proven.
If this mans’s defence proves he his not guilty, his life will be destroyed regardless of the outcome.Family, frends, social, employment opportunities all destroyed upon allegation alone.
I find Simon Lance guilty of abuse of process and sentence him to enteral punishment in hell.
The law must protect due process until such punishment, such devastation on a man can be imposed. Lance thinks punishment comes before verdict, he is not fit or proper.
Who filed the complaint?
Was HE groomed by the ‘girl’ only to be prosecuted when she couldn’t blackmail / exploit him?
Is the girl ‘underage’? Who is she? Why isn’t she named, so that others can stay away from her for the possible above reason?

Never heard of him but really if this is not proven, then his reputation will still suffer, nonetheless. I personally think a law change is needed here, that people are not named, until proven guilty unless culpability is pre established…i.e. caught in the act.
