A Corrections staff member was critically injured during an altercation at the Department of Corrections’ Wilson Street service centre in Whanganui on Wednesday morning.
Emergency services responded at around 10.20am, and the injured staffer was taken to Whanganui Base Hospital, later reported to be in stable condition.
Staff restrained the alleged attacker, a 25-year-old man, until police arrived.
He has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and is set to appear in Whanganui District Court today.
And Corrections wonder why they have a recruiting and manning problem…
Kinda reminds me of a former ex-pat U.S. Marine who was deliberately murdered while serving as a NZ Corrections Officer…and who had a family of a Kiwi wife and two Kiwi kids…!
The Gangs need to be segregated into separate facilities on their own, and placed in a Super max based on their penchant for violent retribution and their targeted assaults on non-violent inmates or those who are on remand / awaiting appeal should be in better non-threatening conditions with better accommodation.
Elderly inmates (age 65 & older) should be placed into a facility that allows for and accommodates those who are also disabled, sick, and non-violent into a place that resembles a modest aged care facility.
BUT-
With Serco around, and the members of the J3wdicial System probably being stockholders (SSS), don’t expect timely, cost-effective re-structuring and re-assignments.
