Health advocate and founder of The Health Forum NZ Lynda Wharton has challenged suggestions that most adverse reactions to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in New Zealand were mild, telling the Royal Commission of Inquiry that the official data tells a very different story.
Wharton appeared before the Royal Commission this week to testify about serious adverse events and deaths reported following the Pfizer mRNA vaccination rollout. During the same session, immunologist Professor Graham Le Gros of the Malaghan Institute—where former Director-General of Health Dr. Ashley Bloomfield also sits on the board—suggested that many vaccine-related adverse event reports could refer to minor issues such as a “sore arm” or bruising, in an apparent attempt to downplay the harms caused by the COVID ‘vaccine’.
“Prof Le Gros is correct that Medsafe received a total of 16,535 reports of injection site pain and 6,055 reports of injection site changes,” Wharton acknowledged. “But that still leaves 200,663 reported adverse events not related to a local injection site reaction.”
According to information obtained under the Official Information Act, there were 223,253 adverse events reported to Medsafe as of February 2025. Wharton emphasised that Medsafe has acknowledged a likely significant underreporting factor, estimating only around 5% of actual adverse events are reported.
Among the non-localised events were:
- 3,034 cases of airway swelling or anaphylaxis
- 29,604 cardiac-related events, including 487 myocarditis cases, 638 pericarditis cases, 110 myocardial infarctions, and 34 instances of cardiac arrest
- 53,188 neurological incidents, such as 666 tremors, 297 seizures, 2321 cases of paraesthesia, and 9 reports of multiple sclerosis
- 93 fetal impacts, including 70 spontaneous abortions
- 415 blood clotting events and 608 bleeding incidents
- 1880 menstrual disorders, including 9 cases of postmenopausal hemorrhage
- 260 stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)
- 7,448 psychiatric events, including 19 instances of suicidal ideation and 2 suicide attempts
Wharton noted that just 22,590 reports involved localised reactions, such as pain or swelling at the injection site. “That’s less than 10% of the total reported adverse events,” she stated.
The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) has reportedly paid out $12.6 million to individuals harmed by the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, an unprecedented figure according to Wharton.
Wharton concluded by warning that dismissing the scale and seriousness of post-vaccination injuries as mere soreness risks ignoring the experiences of thousands of New Zealanders. The Commission is expected to further investigate the management and communication of vaccine risks as part of its broader review of the COVID-19 response.

How can going from under 4000 serious adverse reactions in the last vaccine safety report(which was very concerning at a rate of 1 in 4000 shots administered), to over 20,000 serious adverse reactions in one year NOT be cause for alarm to everyone who works for medsafe and Prof. Le Gros.

In 13 April 2022; Professor Le Gros is quoted in media. The reporting as follows;
Dr Graham Le Gros – the Wellington-based executive director of Malaghan Institute and head of the Vaccine Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand – said the data was still incomplete, and it would take about 10 years to fully understand how different people could react.
“We still don’t know enough about the vaccine and what it can do to the great variety of human beings we have in this country,” he said.
People should continue to report any issues, so experts could study trends and gain a better understanding.
Looking at the number of people who had received the vaccine, the number of adverse reaction claims were “incredibly low-level”, Le Gros said. “But that’s no comfort to those poor 987 people, I really feel for them.”
Would it have been prudent for Professor Le Gros to have indicated to the iInquiry in his testimony that we still have another 5 years to run to establish the true impact of adverse reactions?
