Israel’s military has been instructed to prepare for the first phase of Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan — the release of remaining hostages.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said all available capabilities are being directed to the Southern Command to protect troops, with units on high alert and ready to counter any threats.
Under the proposal, Hamas is to release all 48 hostages, including 20 believed to be alive, within 72 hours of agreement. Hamas has signalled conditional acceptance, saying further negotiations are needed, while mediators continue efforts to finalise the deal.
In Gaza, the announcement has sparked a mix of hope and skepticism. Many Palestinians cautiously welcomed Hamas’s uncharacteristically direct “yes” to the plan, which includes prisoner releases, Israeli withdrawal, and the handover of power to a Palestinian authority.
Yet doubts persist that Israel might resume the conflict after reclaiming hostages, and critics accuse Hamas of prioritising its political survival. Despite ongoing airstrikes in Gaza City and continued artillery fire, some view this as the closest step yet toward ending two years of devastating war.

I doubt either side expect much from the other. This strikes me as manoeuvring of the kind we are seeing in the Ukraine Russia conflict.
There’s absolutely no way that Hamas will release the hostages, because these poor people are the only ace up the terrorists’ sleeve. At best they might release a couple of live ones and a few bodies – but there will be holdups and conditions galore and eventually the whole farce will collapse.
I’m in no way a supporter of Hamas – quite the opposite in fact – but they would be crazy to give away the only remaining leverage they have, and they won’t do it.
Israel should attack with renewed vigour and flatten the place, along with anybody who gets in their way. If they participate in any ‘peace negotiations’ now their whole country will be lost within a few years.
Netanyahu and his government could have negotiated release of hostages 23 months ago.
