A major new study published in June 2025 has found strong evidence that glyphosate—the widely used herbicide found in products like Roundup—causes cancer in rats at doses currently considered safe by regulatory authorities.
Conducted over the full lifespans of test animals, the research linked glyphosate and commercial weedkiller formulations to 14 different tumour types, including leukemia, liver, thyroid, ovarian, testicular, bone, brain, and skin cancers. Most alarmingly, some of the worst cancer outcomes occurred at the lower of two tested doses—0.5 mg/kg/day—which is the current Acceptable Daily Intake in the European Union.
The study also tested actual weedkiller products like Roundup Bioflow and RangerPro, showing they were even more toxic than glyphosate alone. Researchers believe the so-called “inert” ingredients in these commercial formulas amplify the herbicide’s carcinogenic effects. With significant tumour formation and early deaths observed in exposed rats—some before the human equivalent of adolescence—the findings raise urgent concerns for children exposed through parks, playgrounds, and food.
Critics such as No More Glyphosate NZ argue that if glyphosate were a drug, it would have been pulled from the market by now. Despite mounting evidence and lawsuits worldwide, New Zealand regulators are reportedly considering raising residue limits—prompting renewed public pressure to act on what many now see as a clear health risk.
