Shane Christie passes away, aged 39

Former Tasman Mako captain and Highlanders flanker Shane Christie has died in Nelson at the age of 39, leaving New Zealand rugby mourning the loss of a respected leader and advocate for player welfare.

Christie’s career was defined by grit and leadership, from guiding the Mako to their first ITM Cup title in 2013 to captaining the Highlanders to a Super Rugby crown in 2015. But repeated head injuries forced him into early retirement, and he spent his later years candidly speaking about the devastating toll of concussions, inspired in part by the death of his close friend and teammate Billy Guyton in 2023.

Despite his struggles with post-concussion symptoms, Christie remained connected to the game as a coach and through his commitment to advancing research into brain trauma. He pledged to donate his brain to the New Zealand Sports Human Brain Bank and worked to raise awareness of the dangers players face, calling for stronger protections for future generations. Remembered as a humble, loyal figure who never forgot his roots, Christie leaves behind a legacy both on and off the field — as a championship-winning leader and a courageous voice for change in rugby.

Friends paid tribute to his passing on social media with Anna McLoughlin describing him as “an amazing soul who stood firmly for freedom and fought for those who couldn’t fight for themselves,” while Matua Kahurangi called him “a true talent on and off the field, never afraid to ask the tough questions, and genuinely humble in every way.” Penny Marie said “he was one of the sweetest souls I have ever known.”

  1. I just saw his post on X yesterday re the assault he received from someone at the Nelson City council. Now he’s dead today! Wtf?

  2. This is a great loss and tragedy to us, our country and the world. Thank you Shane for your strong, courageous and powerful voice. You used it to speak truth, to dispel the lies and enlightened so many, many Kiwis. You fearlessly stood for truth. And freedom. And for your country and the world. Such a huge gift. So courageous and so much compassion and care. We salute you and are blessed to know you. 💙💫🙏🌟
We will miss you brother, but we will, with effort, put our grief to one side, so we can focus on surrounding you with love and happiness as you fly. Fly high dear wonderful Shane.

    • Thanks Mary. I was struggling to assemble the right words in the right order to properly convey the very deep sense of loss I felt when this news came through.
All of what you wrote…but may I add intelligent, informed, articulate and extraordinarily humble and respectful of others.
And brave. He stepped forward with care, compassion and respect and asked the question we all wanted to ask about the untimely death of Efeso Collins. I can’t think of anyone else who could have done that with such grace and dignity.

      A gift, indeed.

  3. 39 is very young to die from all cause mortality. I wonder if he was protected from all disease on the vaccine schedule?

  4. His conspiratorial rantings referenced antisemitic conspiracy theories…. Hard truths, but the above poster is correct.

A cooker and an antisemite and an enemy of the Jewish people and so an enemy of the world.

    • Well many many did not only like him, but loved him.
So there might have been some truth in his ” rantings”.

And no, jewish people are not ” the world” . At the moment they are below humanity
