A TVNZ-commissioned review of the legacy mainstream media outlet’s news coverage has found no evidence of “systemic bias” or “lack of impartiality” in 1News reporting, identifying only “minor technical or editorial issues” for internal discussion.
Conducted by former Australian legacy media ABC and SBS executive Alan Sunderland, the review analysed a week of TVNZ’s news output and praised its “accuracy, balance, and adherence to editorial standards”.
TVNZ released a summary and three extracts highlighting impartiality and sound news values but declined to release the full report, citing privacy, commercial sensitivity, and the need to protect free expression within the organisation under the Official Information Act.
The decision is being appealed to the Ombudsman by fellow legacy media outlet NZ Herald (paywalled), amid heightened political scrutiny of media impartiality and government pressure on TVNZ to rebuild public trust.
There was scathing reaction to the review’s findings on social media. Critics accused TVNZ of “taking the piss,” calling the review “a biased summary of a biased report about their bias.”
Many users argued that taxpayer funding made the refusal to release the full review unacceptable, with some branding TVNZ “a disgrace to NZ and broadcasting” and “a biased, leftist leaning propagandist entity.”
Others mocked the process, likening it to “letting the wolf investigate wolves,” while a few dismissed the controversy entirely, urging people to simply stop watching.

If the MSM want to keep digging their own viewership grave, I can only see this as a good thing.
Just reviewing that lot briefly:
– the $25.7 million NPAT includes non-cash adjustments – need a better idea of those non-cash adjustments before getting any sense of whether TVNZ are actually profitable or not. EBITDA is a better operational measure than NPAT A good NPAT makes the business look good on paper for now; it does not indicate any better operational performance longer term.
– Total Revenue is down 2.7% which is only a tiny drop given that we’re in recession – so I’d wonder what’s propping up their income which they don’t deserve via true earnings
– Digital Advertising Growth is up 12.7% and forecast to grow to 33% in FY26 – ie TVNZ is fast becoming a source of junk advertising and their junk is forecast to get 33% junkier next year
– Cost Reductions: Operating costs cut by $41.2 million, aligning with their digital-first strategy – this is mainly why their NPAT looks better. They must have sacked unwanted staff outside their “digital-first strategy”.
– no hint anywhere of any editorial integrity
This does not in any way make TVNZ a quality news provider. They are just proving to be a profitable advertiser of unwanted advertising. The headline should be “profitable advertising” rather than any misleading reference to news.
