Former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales, who resigned after kissing female player Jenni Hermoso without consent during the 2023 Women’s World Cup celebrations, was attacked with eggs by his uncle while promoting his new 500-page memoir.
Video of the event shows several eggs being hurled at Rubiales, one striking him in the back before he rushed toward the assailant, who was quickly restrained and later identified by police as his uncle, actor Luis Rubén Rubiales.
Authorities have not offered a motive, though Rubiales described his uncle as “a troubled man,” saying he initially feared the attacker might be armed.
The incident comes months after Rubiales was convicted of sexually assaulting Hermoso, receiving a fine and a restraining order instead of prison time—punishment he continues to dispute while claiming he is the target of a broader conspiracy.
