Bhoomi Chauhan, a 28-year-old student from Bristol, narrowly escaped death after missing Air India flight AI171 by just ten minutes due to heavy traffic en route to Ahmedabad airport.
Frustrated and disappointed at being turned away despite having checked in online, she left the airport to discuss a refund—only to receive a call minutes later informing her the plane had crashed. The London-bound Boeing 787 went down shortly after take-off on Thursday, killing 241 passengers and crew, along with at least eight people on the ground. Chauhan, who was assigned seat 36G, called her survival “a miracle.”
After arriving at the airport less than an hour before departure, airline staff turned her away.
“We got very angry with our driver and left the airport in frustration. I was very disappointed.”
“We left the airport and stood at a place to drink tea and after a while, before leaving… we were talking to the travel agent about how to get a refund for the ticket.
“There, I got a call that the plane had gone down.”
“I requested airline staff to allow me inside as I am only 10 minutes late. I told them that I am the last passenger and so please allow me to board the plane, but they did not allow me.”

She said, “My Ganpati Bappa saved me today. I am thankful to God. “I had come here after 2 years. My body is literally shivering. I am not able to talk. My mind is totally blank now after hearing all that has happened” pic.twitter.com/DbWlUAGx3h— Sanjeev Chauhan PURE JOURNALIST (@SanjeevCrime) June 12, 2025
