The U.K’s Labour Party has ignited a fierce internal row after confirming that transgender women will be excluded from next year’s National Women’s Conference, a decision made following a legal review prompted by the Supreme Court’s ruling that “sex” in the Equality Act refers strictly to biological sex.
Under the new rules, biological males who identify as women will be barred from the conference’s main programme, including keynote speeches, policy sessions and voting, though they may still enter fringe events and exhibition spaces during the Liverpool gathering.
The party says the move aligns with equality law and is intended to strengthen the representation of women within Labour.
But the decision has triggered strong condemnation from Labour for Trans Rights, which argues that long-serving trans members are being shut out of key democratic processes.
The controversy deepened when Baroness Falkner, who recently resigned as chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, accused Labour of abandoning its historic commitment to women’s rights.
She criticised the party and government alike for hesitating to publish EHRC guidance on the Court’s ruling, suggesting ministers fear pushback from pro-self-ID MPs.
Falkner also rebuked Labour’s handling of grooming-gang issues, saying the party failed to protect vulnerable women and girls when it mattered most.
