Coskun Jaques Marius, an aspiring rapper, has appealed his conviction for the 2019 murder of New Zealand man Tane Tahi Manawa, also known as Dre Nova, in Surfers Paradise.
Marius was sentenced to life imprisonment after fatally beating the 38-year-old with a metal pole while he slept, a crime described as “brutal and callous.”
The court heard that the attack stemmed from a trivial disagreement, with Marius angered by a perceived slight about lunch while experiencing drug withdrawal and hunger. Following the murder, Marius sold the victim’s possessions for drugs and falsely accused him of being a rapist.
The appeal, delayed due to administrative issues, has been adjourned to February next year for further review.
During the original sentencing, Justice Glenn Martin condemned the attack as “demonstrative of callous disregard,” saying the motive lacked justification and reflected Marius’ violent impulsivity.
Crown prosecutor Michael Lehane highlighted the trivial nature of the dispute, linking it to Marius’ frustration over not being offered food. Marius will not be eligible for parole until 2040.
