A portrait of Alan Turing created by Ai-Da, a humanoid robot artist, sold for $1,084,800 (£836,667) at Sotheby’s, far exceeding its estimated value of $120,000–$180,000.
The piece, titled “A.I. God,” marks a milestone as the first artwork by a humanoid robot sold at auction, highlighting the merging of AI and contemporary art.
The sale has sparked discussions over AI’s expanding influence, with Ai-Da’s creators saying the artwork’s role in prompting ethical and societal reflections on AI.
The portrait honours Turing’s legacy as a pioneer in computing and artificial intelligence, as well as his pivotal role in cracking Nazi secret codes during World War II.
Oh look, money laundering 😊
Ha! Possibly. Art work by Damien Hirst is hugely exorbitant in the 10’s of millions. Probably 100’s by now. The British art scene in the top echelons is off the scale.
I don’t hate these Alan Turing portraits though. Most AI art I’ve seen is quite cheesy. This captures something of his essence, quite eerie, a certain ‘enigma’ captured in the likeness. Of course the photograph used is, it seems to be, about the only one of him. He loved running and there’s one of him winning a running race but that’s hardly a portrait. There must be limitless possibilities though.
The paradox is of course, that, in some way he was it’s father or the creator of this AI. I guess that’s what makes this bizarre.
How people will wrap their head around this in convoluted discussions I don’t know…
I’m a bit behind the times here in regards to seeing this Item.🤷
