A still life painting by iconic New Zealand artist Charles Frederick Goldie, created when he was just 19 years old, has sold for $89,625 at auction.
Titled Souvenirs from the Field of Battle, the piece is officially recognised as Goldie’s first masterpiece and resurfaced recently after being passed down through two generations of a family.
The work is recognised as an astonishing example of Goldie’s early talent, showcasing his meticulous realism and artistic ambition even before his formal training in Europe. Known primarily for his portraiture, Goldie’s early dedication to ultra-realistic detail is evident in this historic piece.
