Former Singapore minister S. Iswaran was sentenced to 12 months in prison after pleading guilty to receiving over $300,000 worth of improper gifts and obstructing justice.
The 62-year-old former transport and trade minister, who served in the cabinet for 13 years, accepted gifts from businessmen, including tickets to major events like the English Premier League and Formula 1 races.
The case has shocked Singapore, a country known for its clean governance and high ranking on global corruption perception indices.
The investigation revealed that Iswaran accepted lavish gifts while serving as transport minister, shaking Singapore’s reputation as one of the world’s least corrupt nations.
Iswaran, initially charged with 35 offenses, pleaded guilty to five counts, including receiving improper gifts and obstructing justice.
This marks the first time in history a former Singapore cabinet member has been jailed.
