Luck was on the side of Hokitika man Caleb Harris yesterday.
Driving to work his utility vehicle was struck by a bolt of lightning while traveling on the Hokitika to Greymouth road. Harris told media he was driving in heavy rain when he felt a large bang.
He saw a bright flash, the vehicle was shaking, and his ears were ringing. The lights on his dashboard lit up like ‘a Christmas Tree’, then he felt a ‘massive electric shock’. He got out of the vehicle and waited for emergency services to arrive.
The diesel-fueled vehicle didn’t explode, but was completely destroyed by fire.

Don’t take it to bed
There goes the ‘Urban Legend’ idea of being safe in a vehicle that has rubber tyres which are supposed to be insulating the vehicle from lightning strikes…
I’m used to pulling over under an overpass. This increases visibility, shelters from large damaging hail, and minimises the chances of being struck by lightning.
wow intense
This was a bit strange too!
New wheels? Bet it goes real fast – but can you drive it? 🤣🤣🤣

Could have been worse if the vehicle was petrol
Or worse still an EV
