Testing has revealed elevated arsenic levels in drinking water supplied by Waipā District Council and Waikato District Council, joining Hamilton City Council in reporting similar results earlier this week.
All three water suppliers source water from the Waikato River, which has shown slightly higher levels of the toxic metal.
The Water Services Authority and local councils have assured the public that the situation is “under control”, with treatment adjustments underway to lower the levels. Experts say the water remains safe to drink and poses minimal health risks over a short-term exposure.
Auckland’s Watercare, which also draws from the Waikato River, reported arsenic levels well within acceptable standards and has taken proactive measures, such as reducing production at its Waikato treatment plant.
Other councils, including Waipā and Waikato District, are making operational changes to improve water treatment.
Regional testing of the Waikato River continues, with authorities closely monitoring and collaborating to ensure water quality remains safe for consumption and use.
