Fuel efficiency standards eased for imported cars

Fuel efficiency news

The New Zealand government has relaxed standards for improving fuel efficiency in new cars, aligning with Australia’s less stringent regulations.

Transport Minister Simeon Brown stated that the current schedule was too strict for car importers and would result in significant costs for consumers.

The Clean Car Standard, introduced to reduce emissions and prevent inefficient vehicles from being sold in New Zealand, will now have easier targets for 2025-2029.

Clean car advocates have criticised the changes, arguing that weaker standards will lock consumers into higher fuel costs and hinder progress towards a cleaner vehicle fleet.

Lobby group Drive Electric expressed concerns that the relaxed standards will worsen the environmental impact and urged the government to adopt Australia’s comprehensive incentives for electric vehicles (EVs).

The average tailpipe carbon pollution from new cars has increased since the government removed EV subsidies, making the Clean Car Standard crucial for reducing emissions.

Brown defended the changes, citing a review by the Ministry of Transport, which found the original targets too stringent and costly for importers. The government aims to balance emission reduction with maintaining affordable vehicle prices for consumers.

  1. Nissan GTR R35 here we come! Gran Turismo!
While we’re at it, let’s see some of those stupid low speed limits introduced by Labor reversed. What are they trying to do, slow us down to walking speed?

  2. Finally some plain old common sense which is not very common these days. NZ has to thank the great Australian outback for most of this decision although both the Aust. and NZ Govts. will never admit it. The Oz outback is diesel land.. EVs dont work in the great Aussie outback once you go 1000km out there is just no ifrustructure to make them even remotely feasible. Not only that they will simply catch fire and burn instantanously in 45 plus C heat and you too if you are in it. You see the equation they are not telling you about is on a even 35 C. plus day driving on a hot tar sealed road the temperature under the car can be 10 to 15 C above what the temperature of the day is. And all this crap about too much carbon emissions is just that – crap. Oil is the most abundant liquid on earth we are never ever going to run out of it. The Rockefellers called it a fossil fuel to keep the price elevated – BS which still continues today. Carbon dioxide is the essense of all plant life without it we would have a dead planet and nobody would be able to breathe. Global warming and climate change is a BLATANT LIE. It was invented by the ‘Elite’ to bilk the masses. For Gods sake wake up people fuel should be free.
