Green MP Darleen Tana, suspended since March over allegations of migrant exploitation at her husband’s bike business, is now facing fresh scrutiny.
According to a report in legacy media, a migrant worker claims Tana advised him to work in her husband’s shop on a seasonal work visa, despite the visa allowing only horticulture and viticulture jobs. The worker also alleges that Tana instructed him to continue working during lockdown, deeming it ‘essential work.’
These claims follow a previous accusation from another migrant employee about unpaid wages and exploitation, which led to Tana’s suspension and an ongoing investigation by lawyer Rachel Burt.
The latest allegations, supported by WhatsApp messages, suggest Tana was still involved in managing the business despite resigning as a director and shareholder in 2019. The messages reveal Tana’s direct involvement in arranging work hours, discussing wages, and handling financial matters, often deferring to her by her husband, Christian Hoff-Nielsen.
The worker’s claims include unpaid wages, unfulfilled holiday entitlements, and inconsistent payments. The Green Party has maintained Tana’s suspension while Burt’s investigation continues, with no further comments until the probe concludes.
