Kāinga Ora proposes over 600 job cuts in major restructure

Kāinga Ora has announced a proposal to cut a net total of 673 roles—195 of which are currently vacant—as part of a large organisational restructure focused on financial sustainability.

The changes predominantly affect corporate, back-office, and support functions, while frontline tenancy management roles remain untouched.

However, some customer-facing positions, including housing placement and call centre roles, are also impacted.

CEO Matt Crockett announced the shift toward a narrower mandate focused solely on social housing provision, noting that the support for tenants would remain unaffected.

This latest proposal follows 540 confirmed job cuts in November.

Staff and the Public Service Association have until 22 April to provide feedback, with the resizing process expected to conclude by 30 June 2025.

  1. Kāinga Ora is a scam for gaining labour votes. Tax-payer subsidy in running Kāinga Ora runs into hundreds of millions. The actual rent charged is about a quarter of market rent. No economic sense in this at all. Can any government provide such loss making rents to thousands of kiwis living in poor rentals. No government can. Just another woke shyte.
