Luxon rules out Treaty referendum

Treaty Principles Bill news

Prime Minister Chris Luxon has ruled out supporting a public referendum on the Treaty of Waitangi if requested by ACT in post-2026 election negotiations.

Speaking at Rātana Pā, Luxon reiterated National’s position to vote down the Treaty Principles Bill after its select committee process concludes.

Te Pāti Māori and the Green Party have questioned why the bill advanced this far if it was destined to fail, while Labour leader Chris Hipkins blamed National for stoking division between Māori and non-Māori.

Luxon defended the Bill as a coalition obligation with ACT that would soon be “dead in the water.”

    • I’d like to see how many submissions for and against, but confident he’s read the room or rather, the majority who also comprise of educated non-bigots.

      • Read the room…yeah right. If that were the case, why no referendum? What’s there to fear? Indeed, then this issue would be put to bed. And why has this become such an issue ii the first place? Back to Liebor or the Greens with you.

  1. The corporate partnership apartheid agenda must be protected at all costs. “Rules out”, “dead in the water”… wow, Luxon’s version of make New Zealand great again, and all this brought to you by He Puapua 2040.

  2. So rich for the people who’ve been stoking racial division to accuse someone of stoking racial division.

It’s richer than Gordon Ramsay pasta.

  3. Yes because that would be democratic and we can’t have that, can we National? Hopefully, the die hard clowns who vote for this lot, will finally get the message…..

  4. The majority of the country was depending upon Luxton. We are now switching to Act. Those who couldnt wait, or had no choice, went to Australia.

Luxton’s state of the nation Speech ignored the worse economy since 1987. And that took 13 years to recover. There is no building, shops are empty, and well established companies are falling over. Billions wiped off real estste assets, llives ruined.

Most people are in critical suvivial mode.

Hows your tax take projection for 31 March Luxton?

And now we have National party supported apartheid.

My guess Luxton will stand down 8 months out from the election.

My message to National MP’s is to vote Luxton out before you loose your job too.

  5. What a turn-coat Luxon has become. Before the 2023 election he was all about what he was going to do and how National, Act and NZ First were going to work together to get NZ back on track.
Methinks he has made a pact with Maori to keep the status quo while keeping the seat warm as he counts down the hours before he gets his knighthood. (He already as “PM” on his CV).

  6. A traitor to the will of the people of New Zealand. He knows damn well how the cookie would crumble.
What is the punishment for treason?

  7. The parasite classes of political useless eaters and those that wage daily lawfare against civilisation, morality and ethics are finally eroding what remains of social license and submission to governance by kakistocrats. Beware those with nothing left to lose.
