Police believe missing climbers on Mt. Cook died after a fall

Mt Cook news

After a week of challenging conditions, a helicopter was deployed today due to improved weather in the search for three climbers missing on Aoraki Mount Cook.

The search began Monday when the climbers were reported overdue, but dangerous weather hindered efforts for most of the week. Today, the helicopter crew recovered climbing-related items, including a top, energy gels, a jacket, and an ice axe, along with evidence of the climbers’ traverse beneath Zurbriggen Ridge.

Drone footage confirmed signs of their presence, such as footprints and the retrieved items. Despite the findings, police now believe the men fell and did not survive, marking five days since their disappearance.

Police have informed the Coroner of their conclusion and have suspended the active search, although they remain ready to resume operations if credible new information arises.

The families of the climbers, from the United States and Canada, have been notified of the devastating news.

While recovery efforts will be carefully evaluated, the search team expressed their deep sorrow, emphasizing their commitment and hope for a different outcome. The focus now shifts to supporting the families and exploring the feasibility of recovery operations to provide closure.

  1. When did they sneak the obligatory second indigenous name for Mt Cook in there, and when will they inevitably be dropping the English one?

      • “White abuse” apparently = “oh look, there’s a mountain. What should we name it?”

PS: I don’t know about MT Odin, but I would absolutely vote for a MT Thor if they put a lighting conductor in the shape of a hammer on its peak.

  2. Well they didn’t try and rescue them for days on end so yah I guess they would have died because NO ONE rescued them. Did they send up a drone the first day? Unbelievable really. Sad for thr families. RIP nature loving people. Our country has become a bunch of box ticking gutless pussies. In the 80s we would have just gone in and saved them.

  3. New Zealand really needs to think about the outcomes of a severely advantaged race and what it will bring. Living off the backs of other people’s labour and natural resource exclusivity is unworkable.

There are privileged people. They are called children, the sick, elderly, and people who are experiencing hardships.

It is not conditional on skin colour.

More and more voters will move away from National and vote Act.
