The public consultation period for the rewrite of the Arms Act 1983 has officially opened, giving New Zealanders the opportunity to provide feedback on proposed changes to firearm regulations.

Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee announced that the consultation, which began today, will run until February 28, 2025.

Submissions on the Ministry of Justice’s discussion document will help shape the policy development process before a new bill is introduced to Parliament. McKee emphasized the Government’s commitment to establishing a regulatory framework that prioritizes public safety while ensuring regulatory processes are simple and effective.

“It’s crucial that everyone has confidence in how firearms are controlled, and that starts with public involvement in shaping the new legislation,” McKee said, encouraging the public to review the discussion document and share their views.

The discussion document and details on how to participate in the consultation process are available online. The current phase of public feedback will close on February 28, with an additional opportunity for submissions once the proposed bill reaches the select committee stage.
