Record number of migrants arrive in New Zealand

Migration news

According to provisional estimates from Stats NZ, New Zealand experienced a record number of migrant arrivals in the year up to November 30, totaling 249,500, a 135% increase compared to the previous year.

Migrant departures also rose by 29% to about 122,100, resulting in a net migration gain of approximately 127,400 people, significantly higher than the net gain of 11,000 in the previous year.

This net migration gain included a record net gain of 171,900 non-citizens but a record net loss of 44,500 New Zealand citizens. The largest contributions to the net migration gains were from citizens of India, the Philippines, China, Fiji, and South Africa, with Indian citizens leading at an estimated 44,978 arrivals.

There was a provisional net migration loss of 21,100 people to Australia for the year ending June 2023, driven by a net loss of 21,400 New Zealand citizens which offset a small net gain from non-New Zealand citizens. This continues the trend of net migration loss to Australia, which averaged about 3,000 per year from 2014 to 2019.
