Police are investigating the circumstances of a vehicle crash leading to the death of a young woman on the southwestern motorway early this morning.
At 3.24am Police were advised that a car had crashed on the southwestern motorway.
Tragically a 19-year-old woman was confirmed deceased at the scene.
A 20-year-old man is assisting Police with their enquiries.
Police are working to build a picture of what took place prior to the crash.
An examination of the crash scene is ongoing and the road remains closed while this takes place, although it is expected to be open shortly.
We understand the road closure will cause disruption and officers are working hard to complete the scene examination as quickly as possible so the road can be reopened.
At this early stage of our investigation no further information can be provided.

Emergency services have responded to a one-vehicle crash on State Highway 20, Mangere at about 3.20am this morning.
One person has died following a serious incident on the motorway and one person has been arrested in relation to this.
The road is closed at the Puhinui and SH20B onramp and also the Roscommon Road and Cavendish Drive onramp.
Please note that this means travel to the airport via SH20B (Puhinui Road), will now be via Papatoetoe and SH20A.
These diversions will be in place for some time while the scene is investigated.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and take the alternative routes where possible.
