FA Cup: Tottenham Hotspur 1 – 0 Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Burnley 1-0 in their Third Round FA Cup match today at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Tottenham Hotspur advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup by defeating Premier League rival Burnley, thanks to a stunning goal by Pedro Porro.

Despite being without club captain Son Heung-min, who is participating in the Asian Cup with South Korea, Tottenham struggled to capitalize on their chances until Porro’s decisive goal in the 78th minute. This was Porro’s first goal of the season since his permanent transfer from Sporting Lisbon.

The goal came after Burnley’s goalkeeper Arijanet Muric poorly threw the ball out, allowing Porro to win a challenge and then score from 25 yards. Burnley had a significant opportunity in the first half through Zeki Amdouni, but he missed a shot from within the penalty area.

The match ended dramatically with Muric twice joining Burnley’s corners, and in the final moments, Amdouni failed to convert a close-range volley. This defeat marks Burnley’s fifth in their last seven games across all competitions, leaving them 19th in the Premier League and focusing on avoiding relegation.

The draw for the FA Cup’s fourth round is scheduled for January 8, ahead of the Wigan Athletic versus Manchester United match. Tottenham’s coach, Ange Postecoglou, who previously led Scottish giants Celtic to a treble, fielded a strong team, reflecting the importance of the FA Cup for Spurs, who haven’t won a trophy since 2008.

Tottenham made only two changes from their recent Premier League victory due to Son and midfielder Pape Matar Sarr’s international duties. The team also missed Yves Bissouma, with all three players potentially absent until mid-February.

In Son’s absence, Tottenham missed several chances. Richarlison and Brennan Johnson failed to convert attempts on goal, and others like Giovani lo Celso and Rodrigo Bentancur also missed opportunities.

Burnley’s coach, Vincent Kompany, a former FA Cup winner, made five changes to his team. Despite early chances from Wilson Odobert and Anass Zaroury, Burnley couldn’t score. Tottenham’s pressure eventually paid off with Porro’s goal, and they held on to secure their progression in the FA Cup.
