Taibbi: Mainstream media is dead

In a recent episode of Going Underground, journalist Matt Taibbi delved into the implications of Donald Trump’s re-election victory, critiquing what he views as legacy media’s unsuccessful campaign to defeat Trump and support Kamala Harris.

Taibbi, known for his work on the Twitter Files and as publisher of Racket News, the former Rolling Stone contributing editor sees Trump’s win as more than a political shift—it marks a profound change in how Americans view traditional authorities.

“People are no longer just ignoring authorities; they’re actively defying them,” Taibbi noted, pointing to the rising desire for free speech and reduced digital censorship.

He voiced optimism that the current political climate, including figures like JD Vance and Elon Musk, could push for more open discourse and challenge online restrictions.

Taibbi also addressed broader geopolitical issues, speculating on the future of Ukraine under Zelensky and questioning whether Trump would curb US involvement in foreign wars.

He reflected on the vilification of the working class since the 2008 financial crisis, arguing that mainstream media’s narrative alienated a significant voter base. Taibbi also cited Harris’s rejection of popular alternative media outlets, like Joe Rogan’s podcast, as a crucial mistake in her campaign.

He called for a larger-scale transparency effort akin to the Twitter Files, suggesting that an exposé on government censorship and covert foreign policies could reshape the public’s trust in authority.

Taibbi concluded by exploring the potential composition of Trump’s new cabinet, his approach to the national security apparatus, and the ongoing economic monopolisation that he believes Trump must address to fulfill his promises.

  1. It’s not true that Trump would curb US involvement in foreign wars. He want out of Ukraine so he can use that money to fight Iran and China. So same old US imperialism.
