Wellington Police took a hardline approach against anti-social road user behaviour across the region last night, with a significant number of vehicle seizures, impoundments, and infringements issued under ‘Operation Kereru’.
Focusing particularly on the Hutt Valley area, police enforced a zero-tolerance policy aimed at disrupting gatherings before they could gain traction. By the end of the operation, police had:
- Issued 32 infringement notices
- Suspended three driver’s licenses
- Impounded three vehicles
- Stickered 10 vehicles as unroadworthy
- Summonsed three drivers for excess breath alcohol
Assisting the operation were bailiffs from the Ministry of Justice, who seized four additional vehicles and collected a large number of outstanding fines.
Acting Area Prevention Manager Senior Sergeant Samuel Avison said the operation was a success in preventing illegal activity. “Our high-visibility and enforcement approach meant groups were intercepted before they could set up in one location, stopping them from engaging in antisocial road user behaviours,” he said.
“These activities not only disturb residents and damage roads but also put drivers, passengers, bystanders, and other motorists in extreme danger,” added Avison.
Police are urging the public to report illegal activity as it occurs, providing as much information as is safely possible to enable a swift and effective response.
Reports can be made by calling 111 in emergencies or via the 105 service for non-urgent matters. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
