Israel has launched a series of strikes on Syrian military assets following the fall of the Assad regime, confirming attacks on Syria’s naval fleet and over 350 airstrikes targeting strategic sites across the country.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) struck ports at Al-Bayda and Latakia, where 15 vessels were docked, along with airfields, military vehicles, and arms depots in Damascus, Homs, and Tartus.
Israeli officials stated the operations aimed to neutralise threats and prevent weapons, including sea-to-sea missiles, from reaching extremist groups.
Meanwhile, IDF ground forces moved into the demilitarised buffer zone bordering the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, temporarily seizing Syrian positions.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterised these troop movements as of a “defensive nature”, expressing a desire for peaceful relations with Syria’s new leadership, led by rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
The strikes, which have devastated Syria’s military capabilities, drew criticism from Turkey and human rights groups, with accusations of “violating Syrian sovereignty.”
Rami Abdul Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported the destruction of nearly all Syrian army assets.
