University in UK faces record fine amid free speech controversy

The University of Sussex faces a record £585,000 fine from England’s higher education regulator, the Office for Students (OfS), for failing to uphold free speech and academic freedom.

The OfS found that policies designed to prevent harassment, particularly regarding “trans and non-binary equality,” created a “chilling effect” leading to self-censorship among staff and students.

The investigation was prompted by the controversy surrounding gender-critical philosophy professor Kathleen Stock, who resigned in 2021 after facing accusations of “transphobia”.

Sussex University condemned the ruling as imposing “free speech absolutism” and argued it undermines efforts to protect against abuse and harassment.

  1. Ha ha ha…..the establishment in the UK is busy tangling itself up, in its own contradictory, self defeating, narratives……

  2. “Oh no, free speech absolutism 😱

There are no varying degrees of free speech, you either have it or you don’t. The UK clearly don’t.

The only thing this university is distressed about is that Kweir Starmer hasn’t dialled the volume down far enough in their opinion. Not YET anyway.
