Hard evidence from an arms monitoring group proves Indonesia is secretly bombing West Papua with ammunition bought in Europe.
The shocking relevation of a continued genocide against Pacific peoples in New Zealand’s own backyard is made by the United Liberation Movement for West Papua Provisional Government (ULMWP).
A report by Conflict Armament Research (CAR) has shown that Indonesia is converting mortar shells bought from Serbia for use in military raids on West Papuan villages. Such military operations have created a humanitarian crisis in West Papua: according to the UN, between 60,000 and 100,000 rural West Papuans have been displaced over the past four years.
Nduga regency has been under siege since 2018, with over 45,000 Nduga people having to abandon their homes due to Indonesian aggression. As Indonesia has intensified their military occupation, sending 25,000 additional troops over the past three years, the crisis of internal displacement has spread to other areas like Intan Jaya, Maybrat, and Oksibil. Papuans forced from their homes live in poor conditions, with children regularly suffering from malnutrition and mothers having to give birth without adequate medical support.
‘Thanks to this report, there is proof that munitions bought from Europe are directly contributing to the displacement of West Papua. The United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Provisional Government is advising all international media to pay attention to Indonesia’s military activity in West Papua,’ says Jacob Rumbiak, ULMWP Spokesperson.
The Provisional Government is also reiterating its call for a visit to West Papua by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
‘The case for such a visit has never been clearer: Indonesia is a member of the United Nations, and has an obligation not to misuse weaponry it purchases from other members. The war they are fighting against West Papua is illegal under international law,’ said Rumbiak.

Our friends began saying last year these shells were fired from helicopters, which did not make sense because they are mortar shells from a known manufacturer. But a Reuters report a week ago explain that Indonesian Intelligence (BIN) has purchased and modified 2500 mortar shells for use from helicopters. It violates NZ and international law of every UN member, our legal obligation towards West Papua is assered in the Charter of the United Nations article 76; the reason that all of Chapter XII and XII of the Charter are applicable to our UN legal relationship with West Papua is because we voted on 21st Sept 1962 to invade and subjugate West New Guinea (West Papua) with UN troops as Indonesia was asking the General Assembly to do in the 1962 agreement it got the Netherlands to also sign.
