68 people have died in a prison riot in Ecuador that was sparked off by gang tensions.
What started off as a serious disturbance soon turned into a massacre at the Litoral Penitentiary, a large prison near the town of Guayaquil, south of the capital Quito. The prison’s Second Ward, housing around 700 inmates was the epicentre of the bloody chaos.
Video circulating on social media shows the aftermath of the horror, with prisoners burning the bodies of their rivals on prison grounds and numerous bloodied and mutilated corpses.
This is the second incident of mass killings in the Litoral Penitentiary this year, with 119 inmates killed following a riot in September.
