A global design team envisions the proposed new stadium at Quay Park, dubbed Te Tōangaroa, as potentially becoming Auckland’s answer to the Sydney Opera House.
Revealed in detailed plans, the 15-hectare precinct aims to enhance Auckland’s CBD with a blend of hospitality, retail, office, residential spaces, and public areas, highlighted by a 55,000-capacity stadium. The blueprint, ‘inspired by Māori culture and Auckland’s natural and historical elements’, features a U-shaped design that offers views of Waitemata Harbour and Rangitoto Island.
Its design departs radically from traditional stadium architecture, aspiring instead to be a ‘significant urban sculpture that fosters a deep sense of place.’
HKS Australasia, part of the project’s design team, stresses the importance of a design that integrates with Auckland’s landscape, aiming for the stadium to serve as a landmark and catalyst for urban regeneration, particularly on the city’s eastern side.
The project, one of four being considered by an Auckland Council working group, is not just about sports; it aims to activate the area with amenities that attract visitors even on non-event days. HKS’s vision is to create a stadium that complements its surroundings, encouraging engagement with the city’s waterfront and contributing to the precinct’s vibrancy.

The last thing taxpayers in Auckland needs is this millstone hung around their necks
How about they sort the sewerage and other infrastructure that they apparently need to raise taxes by 25-30% first. For crying out loud, whos’ ego trip is this. If it is so needed and wanted, fund it privately
