Chiefs maintain early season dominance with victory over Highlanders

The Chiefs have extended their winning streak early in the season, securing a 28-21 triumph against the Highlanders at FMG Stadium in Hamilton.

The Round 5 victory was largely built on an impressive first-half performance, where the home team established a 21-0 lead by halftime.

The tone was set early on by a misstep from the Highlanders, as flyhalf Rhys Patchell’s initial kick went directly into touch, giving the Chiefs an advantageous starting position. Although Damian McKenzie missed a penalty attempt, the Chiefs opened the scoring through Daniel Rona after a skillful offload from Shaun Stevenson.

The Chiefs capitalised further when the Highlanders were reduced to 14 men, with Timoci Tavatavanawai receiving a yellow card. Bradley Slater, the Chiefs’ hooker, then powered over the line with the team making the most of their numerical advantage.

The situation deteriorated for the Highlanders when Tanielu Tele’a was sent off with a red card for a dangerous tackle on Quinn Tupaea.

Rameka Poihipi extended the Chiefs’ lead by breaking through to score, following the dominant start.

Cortez Ratima also made his mark with a try, capping an excellent performance by the scrumhalf and benefiting from a break by Damian McKenzie.

Nonetheless, the Highlanders fought back, triggered by Tavatavanawai, who scored in the 59th minute. The game’s dynamic further shifted when Chiefs’ Luke Jacobson received a yellow card.

Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens and Nikora Broughton managed to score late tries for the Highlanders, bringing the game to a thrilling climax.

Despite a final attempt by the Highlanders after the siren, the Chiefs’ defense stood firm, clinching the victory.
