Ambush in Normandy leaves two prison officers dead, massive manhunt underway

Normandy ambush news
Mohamed Amra.

Two French prison officers were killed and two critically injured while transporting prisoner Mohamed Amra, known as “The Fly”, near Rouen in Normandy.

The attack occurred when a car rammed the prison van at a toll booth, and gunmen opened fire with heavy weapons, freeing Amra.

Hundreds of police officers and gendarmes have been deployed in a massive manhunt.

French President Emmanuel Macron assured citizens on X that every effort is being made to capture the attackers. The inmate, Mohamed Amra, convicted of burglary and implicated in a fatal kidnapping, has ties to a gang in Marseille.

The ambush took place at around 11:00 (09:00 GMT) on the A154 motorway. The attackers escaped in a car, later found abandoned near the toll gate. Roadblocks have been set up across northwest France, and police are following up on all leads.

French Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti, after a crisis meeting, confirmed the deaths and pledged that the perpetrators would be found and ‘severely punished.’
