SH1 over the Brynderwyn Hills is set to reopen tonight at 11.59pm, following a four-month closure that significantly impacted the region’s economy.
The SH1 route will be available for two-way traffic.
NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) confirmed that while the road will reopen, ongoing work behind safety barriers will continue, with a final layer of asphalt to be applied in late spring.
The closure triggered by severe weather events and subsequent road damage, has cost the region an estimated $230 million.
Throughout the closure, detours added significant travel time and costs for motorists and heavy trucks.
