Beloved Wellington rugby coach dies suddenly

Willie Leota was the 1st XV coach at St. Patrick’s College, Wellington.

The Wellington rugby community is reeling from the sudden death of Willie Leota. Leota, in his lates 40s, was an Old Boy of the college. He passed away unexpectedly yesterday. The cause of death has not yet been made public.

Leota was known for his dedication and passion for the sport, and had been an integral part college and wider Wellington rugby community, influencing the lives of many players.

Tributes poured in from around the country on the school’s rugby Facebook page.

“Our Rugby community is devastated by the sudden passing today of our 1st XV Coach, Old Boy and great human Willie Leota. Willie meant so much to the students, parents, and supporters of our College. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wille’s whānau at this time. Rest well our friend,” the college said in a statement.

“SPC was everything to our Dad. Being able to inspire and be inspired by, not only his friends from his school days but by the young men he coached, gave him purpose. He gave his all to this school,” Moana Leota said.

Mollie Leota, another of Leota’s children described him as “my beautiful dad – so special.”

Willie Leota’s unexpected passing leaves a significant void in the college community.

    But nothing to see here.
    Although he might be fortunate to make it to old age, apparently dementia numbers are going through the roof in old folks homes.
    Condolences to the family though.
