Talley’s worker dies in workplace incident in Port Nelson

A Talley’s employee tragically lost their life following a workplace incident at Port Nelson on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 12:50 pm, where the individual was found in critical condition. Despite immediate efforts to administer CPR, the worker could not be revived.

The staff member was injured while working at Talley’s wharf in Nelson, and emergency responders, including an ambulance and three rapid response vehicles from St John, were dispatched shortly after 12:35 pm. The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation, with Maritime New Zealand and the police looking into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Talley’s Ltd chief executive, Tony Hazlett told state media he was deeply shocked over the tragic event, extending condolences to the worker’s family and ensuring support for both the family and employees affected by the loss. The company is cooperating with police and Maritime NZ during the ongoing investigation.

The police are in the process of notifying the next of kin, and the incident will be referred to the Coroner. Further details about the victim are being withheld pending the completion of these notifications.
