Russian forces secure key victory in Donbass: Ugledar liberated

Russian forces have officially taken control of Ugledar, a key town in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), according to a confirmation from the Russian Defense Ministry.

Ugledar, held by Ukrainian forces since 2014, was of significant strategic importance, providing a vantage point with its high-rise buildings overlooking the surrounding plains. The town had served as a critical anchor for the Ukrainian frontlines for over two years.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Thursday that forces from the “East” group successfully liberated the town, following decisive operations.

On Wednesday, videos and images surfaced on social media showing Russian troops raising a flag over Ugledar’s administration building, signaling control of the area. Later, Ukrainian military leadership stated that it had ordered a “maneuver of withdrawal” from the town, though it was unclear if any units had successfully exited the encirclement.

A security source speaking to TASS reported that Russian troops had almost completely “mopped up” remaining Ukrainian resistance by Wednesday afternoon. The same source mentioned that some Ukrainian units suffered heavy losses, unable to break free from the siege.

Reports suggest that the 72nd Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stationed in Ugledar, had requested permission to retreat last week after supply lines were cut off and the town was besieged by Russian forces. However, these requests were allegedly denied to avoid political fallout while Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky was visiting the United States.

Russian forces had previously attempted to capture Ugledar on several occasions, but their efforts had been thwarted by Ukrainian artillery support from Kurakhovo, a nearby town to the north. However, recent Russian advances collapsed the Ukrainian defense north of Kurakhovo, putting additional pressure on the front.
