Archaeologists have identified the remains of James Fitzjames, captain of HMS Erebus, one of two ships that were part of Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated 19th-century Arctic expedition.
DNA from the skeletal remains matched a living relative of Fitzjames, offering a rare glimpse into the tragic fate of the crew. After abandoning their ice-bound ships in 1848, 105 men, including Fitzjames, attempted to trek overland in search of safety.
All perished during the journey, and some, including Fitzjames, were cannibalised in their final desperate days, as confirmed by cut marks on his bones.
The discovery sheds new light on the grim reality of survival during the doomed expedition, where even high-ranking officers like Fitzjames were not spared from the crew’s desperate acts.
The new identification follows the earlier confirmation of Erebus’ chief engineer, John Gregory, whose remains lacked signs of cannibalism. As researchers continue to study the expedition’s remains and shipwrecks, the mystery of what unfolded during Franklin’s last voyage continues to captivate historians and the public alike.
