Gennady Beybutyan, a Ukrainian businessman involved in enforcing the country’s controversial military draft, was found dead near Odessa with gunshot wounds, according to local reports.

Beybutyan led a volunteer group called the “Law Enforcement Assistance Unit,” which worked with conscription officers to track down draft evaders. His group gained notoriety for conducting aggressive raids, sometimes resorting to violence. Amid ongoing investigations into his death, authorities have launched a murder probe, though the motive remains unclear.

Beybutyan’s unit has faced allegations of corruption, with claims that they accepted bribes from men seeking to avoid military service.

The volunteers were reportedly exempt from conscription themselves, leading to suspicions of their involvement in illicit schemes.

The group was also embroiled in violent disputes with other conscription patrols competing for influence and corruption opportunities.
