Mitchell Santner’s career-best 7-53 helped New Zealand bundle India out for 156 on day two of the second Test in Pune, giving the visitors a strong grip on the three-match series.
After securing a 103-run lead in the first innings, New Zealand ended the day at 198-5, extending their advantage to 301 runs with Tom Blundell (30*) and Glenn Phillips (9*) at the crease.
Washington Sundar’s four wickets kept India in contention, but crucial contributions from Tom Latham, who scored 86, and other New Zealand batters saw the Black Caps establish a commanding position as they aim for their maiden series victory in India.
India’s batsmen struggled against New Zealand’s disciplined spin attack on a tricky surface. Santner dismissed Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Sarfaraz Khan in quick succession, while Phillips contributed with 2-26.
Despite a gritty 38 from Ravindra Jadeja, India’s batting lineup faltered, with Rishabh Pant and Ashwin falling cheaply. New Zealand, having won the first Test by eight wickets, now appear well-positioned to secure the series, as India faces an uphill battle to save their 19-series unbeaten home record before the final Test in Mumbai.
