In an opinion piece former New York Times reporter Alex Berenson announced his support for Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election, a decision he describes as “challenging but necessary”.
Berenson, who previously indicated he would support a Democrat over Trump in 2024, originally hoped Florida Governor Ron DeSantis would secure the Republican nomination.
However, after Trump’s decisive primary victory, Berenson reconsidered, citing concerns over the Democratic Party’s stance on issues like free speech, border security, and public health mandates. While acknowledging Trump’s controversial approach, Berenson wrote it was his disapproval of the Democrats’ “forced mRNA vaccines on tens of millions of healthy adults” and their push towards regulations that he believes will make gasoline-powered vehicles unaffordable that has made him back Trump.
Berenson was specifically concerned about the influence of “elites” in media, academia, and public health, accusing them of censorship and intolerance toward differing opinions.
He argued that Trump’s confrontational style is warranted, pointing to recent legal battles and media scrutiny as factors contributing to Trump’s frustrations. “If Donald Trump’s words have grown more vicious, he has his reasons,” Berenson stated, referencing Trump’s legal challenges and continued campaign efforts.
Ultimately, Berenson described his decision as difficult but underscored it as his only “viable choice”, urging readers to reconsider the influence of what he perceives as a controlling elite in bed with the Democratic party.
