During a visit to flood-stricken Paiporta in Valencia, Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia faced a hostile crowd, who threw mud and shouted accusations of “murderer” and “shame” at the royal couple, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and other leaders.
The visit came after devastating floods claimed over 200 lives, leaving communities devastated and cut off from basic services.
Protesters, frustrated by what they see as insufficient warning and support from authorities, overwhelmed the king’s security, pelting the royal entourage with mud and other objects.
Emergency responders are still searching for survivors in submerged car parks and tunnels amid escalating tensions.
As crowds grew angrier, Sánchez and Valencian regional head Carlos Mazón were evacuated, while the king and queen attempted to console residents, some of whom voiced despair over lost homes and livelihoods.
The royal visit was later criticized by Valencian officials, who described it as poorly timed amidst growing unrest.
Acknowledging the public’s frustration, King Felipe expressed understanding in a statement, while Prime Minister Sánchez mobilized 10,000 more troops and police, recognising that the response so far had been “not enough” to meet the needs of the devastated region.
