In a highly disputed runoff, Moldova’s pro-EU president Maia Sandu claimed victory with 55.03% of the vote, overtaking challenger Alexandr Stoianoglo in an election marred by allegations of rigging and voter manipulation.
Early results had shown Stoianoglo, who supports balanced relations with both Russia and the EU, in the lead.
Yet, as counting continued into the night, Sandu surged ahead, sparking suspicions of irregularities.
Criticism mounted from opposition parties, including the Party of Socialists, which questioned the fairness of the election process, particularly noting the limited polling access for Moldovans in Russia, a move that appears to have sidelined a significant voter demographic.
Sandu celebrated her victory as a “triumph of democracy”, pledging to unite the country despite her divisive pro-EU stance.
EU leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, quickly endorsed Sandu, underscoring the election’s strategic importance for Moldova’s EU integration.
However, the narrow margin in last month’s referendum on EU integration and widespread frustration with Sandu’s anti-Russian rhetoric reveal a deeply divided nation.
Allegations of meddling and illegal voter transport to polling stations have cast a shadow over the election.

It’s all too apparent now how democracy is just an illusion. But for me it became apparent when our beloved Jacinda took power in the Beehive cobbling together a coalition of unlikely bed partners. That was when I started taking notice and realising the Donald Trump actually had some merit and Hillary Clinton was a total douche. Corrupt in every way along with all the other Democrats.
After that moment Our beloved Jacinda could never sell me on anything. She was all for herself.
The EU is a terrible nightmare and that awakening still seems a long way away, prolonged by election stealing.
the ” awakening” of EU countries will probably take place when the financial system break down as gvt are penniless and will either default or crush the population with so much taxes that it will revolt. Hard times coming any way.
I would advise europeans to buy plenty of groceries, such as pasta, rice , lentils and tinned meat and fish , tinned milk and a few cans of oil
