IRD stops sharing taxpayer data with social media platforms amid privacy concerns

IRD news

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has ended its practice of sharing taxpayer data with social media platforms for “targeted advertising”, following backlash from over 8,000 taxpayers.

IRD Commissioner Peter Mersi explained that while the data was securely encrypted and hashed, public discomfort around data privacy led to the decision to cease this practice.

Recent reviews revealed two cases of unintended data disclosures, affecting up to 268,000 taxpayers, although these breaches did not require legal notification under privacy laws, according to a report in state media.

Despite defending the security of its systems, IRD acknowledged concerns raised by privacy advocates and citizens, marking a shift in its approach to taxpayer data use.

  1. Don’t worry people. If we go all digital your personal information and data is safe with us. 🙄

I am going back to paper. I recently had the unfortunate experience of part of my email being forwarded to others without my approval. I now no longer send emails. Too easy for others to implicate or exploit.

  2. I was one of the people who contacted them about this. The response myself and my wife received, I’d characterise as somewhere between flippant and dismissive. Loathe IRD but then I can’t think of a so called state institution, I have much respect for anymore.

    • Thank you for contacting the bureaucratic beast. I didn’t even know they were sharing information. I do not use any social media, but that doesn’t mean that my info was not released. D@MN them.

  3. New Zealand like Canada and Australia and others are Crown colonies.
Crown colonies are controlled by the Empire of the Three City States, namely City of London, Vatican City and District of Columbia.
Although geographically separate, the city states of London, the Vatican and the District of Columbia are one interlocking empire called Empire of the City. (The flag of Washington’s district of Columbia has three red stars. One for each city state in the three-city empire.)
This corporate empire of three city states controls the world economically, through London’s inner city, militarily through the District of Columbia, and spiritually through the Vatican.
The IRD is a Crown corporation.
So, it just begs the question, where does our tax (legalized theft) and our collected personal information really go?
It looks like we are debt slaves/serfs to the owners/controllers of a Crown colony masquerading as New Zealand?
