Trump’s election victory certified by Congress

Congress formally certified Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential victory on Monday, clearing the way for his inauguration on January 20.

The session, presided over by outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris, saw the presentation of Trump’s 312 electoral votes compared to Harris’s 226. Senators and representatives from both parties shook hands in a show of bipartisan civility, a striking contrast to the chaos that unfolded during the 2020 certification process.

Despite a snowstorm that shuttered federal offices and schools, lawmakers gathered to complete the final procedural step in confirming Trump’s return to the Oval Office.

Harris recorded a pre-certification message stressing the importance of a peaceful transfer of power as a cornerstone of democracy.

Trump, addressing supporters on Truth Social, called the event “a big moment in history.”

The certification marks the culmination of a contentious election season that saw Republicans secure control of both houses of Congress alongside the presidency.
