Auckland Transport (AT) is appealing to the public for help after the theft of road safety fencing valued at $75,000 from multiple sites across Albany and the North Shore.
The stolen fencing, which was recently installed to safeguard pedestrians, was taken from atop retaining walls and steep embankments, posing a serious public safety risk.
The thefts occurred in stages, with over 60 black metal fence panels removed from a site between Silver Moon Road and the raised pedestrian crossing on Gills Road.
Approximately 50 panels were stolen late last year, followed by another theft last week. Earlier in November, 10 panels were also reported missing from a repaired site on Glenvar Road.
Local residents, angered by the thefts, invited Uzra Casuri Balouch from the Upper Harbour Local Board to visit the affected site. Balouch condemned the thefts, stating, “The appalling theft of these panels has put the public’s safety at risk, as these fences were protecting pedestrians from the drop-off of a steep embankment. The theft is also a significant cost to Auckland ratepayers.”
AT noted that dismantling the panels would have required at least two people, a vehicle, and significant time, suggesting a coordinated effort. The incidents have been reported to New Zealand Police, and investigations are underway.
Authorities are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage that could aid the investigation to contact AT’s customer service line at 09 355 3553 or report to New Zealand Police. Tips can also be shared anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
