Prime Minister Christopher Luxon revealed that China did not inform New Zealand about its warship task group, which included a destroyer or cruiser, a frigate, and a refueller, before engaging in what appeared to be live fire training in the Tasman Sea on Friday.
The incident, marked by unexpected radio messages that led airlines to alter flight paths near New Zealand and Australia, prompted both nations to closely monitor the situation with HMNZS Te Kaha and P-8A Poseidon aircraft.
Luxon said that while the ships were operating within international waters and legal norms, the lack of communication regarding their unusual configuration and intended movements has raised concerns and led to increased scrutiny from defence officials.
“They are in international waters, they are completely within the balance of international law and the UN Convention on the law on the sea, which is important, it is important that all countries have freedom of navigation, it works for us when we are out and about in the world as well,” he said.
