US President Donald Trump says American forces have carried out a major bombing raid on Iran’s Kharg Island, describing the operation as one of the most powerful military strikes seen in the region.
Posting on Truth Social shortly after boarding Air Force One for Florida, Trump said the United States Central Command had “executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East” and had “totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island.”
He said oil infrastructure on the island had been deliberately spared, warning that decision could quickly change if Iran or any other actor threatened shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
“I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island. However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision,” Trump wrote.
Kharg Island is a small five-mile-long outcrop about 15 nautical miles off Iran’s coast and is regarded as a critical economic asset for Tehran, with 90 percent of Iran’s export crude oil passing through the island. Large tankers move oil from the terminal through the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, often bound for China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil.
Any disruption to access would severely damage Iran’s economy.
Earlier this month, Axios reported Trump had been weighing the possibility of sending special forces to seize the island.
Before his social media statement, Trump also spoke to reporters while boarding Air Force One, declining to predict how long the conflict would continue.
“I can’t tell you that,” he said. “I mean, I have my own idea, but what good does it do? It’ll be as long as it’s necessary. They’ve been decimated.”
Pressed on what he meant by Iran offering unconditional surrender, Trump said it meant the country’s navy, air force and most of its military capability were effectively gone.
“It means, very simply, that we are in a position of dominance that nobody’s ever seen before,” he said, adding: “Whether or not they’re able to say the words.”
Asked whether his objectives matched those of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump indicated there may be differences but again stressed American military strength.
“Well I think they might be a little different, I guess,” he said. “But he will tell you there’s never been a power like the power of the United States.”
