Cyclone Vaianu has crossed the coast near the Maketū Peninsula in the Bay of Plenty, bringing damaging winds and intense rainfall across large parts of the North Island, with widespread warnings in place.

Heavy rain alerts cover regions from Northland through Auckland and the Bay of Plenty to parts of Gisborne and central ranges, while the most severe wind warnings apply to Great Barrier Island, Coromandel, and Rotorua.

Power outages have already affected more than 1,600 properties, and wind gusts reaching 130km/h have been recorded in exposed coastal areas.

Authorities are urging residents to stay informed, revise travel plans, and follow official guidance as conditions continue to deteriorate.
